Gangs were formed as early as the 14th century, and were organized differently than modern day gangs. Most gangs in today’s world use violence whereas previously gangs were focused on discipline by following all the rules and being well structured. Vice Lords were formed in year 1950s, and they started as an African American movement which began as an organization (ChicagoGangs 2016), proving that the focus was about support for the community not the violence it represents today.
Violence became a bigger part of gang life when drugs were being distributed among rival gangs. To further illustrate this point, its important when more gangs were being formed for instance the first couple gangs were majority polish. They brought their business and properties and set certain boundaries.
Gangs during this time period focus on being loyalty and respect all rules introduced guns were not included but making the community a better environment.
Modern Day Gangs
In today’s inner cities, most gangs are mostly made of African American or Hispanics. This change in the racial composition of gangs is due to the lack of communication and the use of weapons. In 2016, most gangs fight for territory with the guns and create violence. Children are being killed in the streets and kids are joining gangs at young ages. Children around Chicago areas are not able to play outside without worrying about getting shot or killed.
People join gangs for various reasons today. It’s easy for children, or any other person, to join a gang for protection and to feel belonging. Many African Americans and Hispanics face struggles, and children make bad decisions. Without good resources in the communities it becomes easy to do careless things. For instance, joining a gang and being in the streets. Getting involved with the drug business. Once you have money in your pocket you start to love it and it becomes a hobby selling drugs and getting in trouble. It all goes back to the alternative that there should be more green space and resources for children and teens. When times are hard for people, it’s easy to give up on life and start to influence to do bad things. Without green space you will not see children playing outside and not see children running around enjoy themselves. This also creates a lack of communication among children and parents and also the community. Everyone is isolated and not bonded as we are supposed to be and help each other. When there is a lack of resources it creates a bad environment and creates violence,sometimes even bad tension. Young people are influenced to robbing because they need money or join a gang because the bad things might feel good for a person without realizing the bad consequences of their actions. The lack of jobs makes many join gangs because of the drug business. Having money and guns gives people a feeling of superiority and power. We see others neighborhoods with good places for food and green spaces and you don’t see gangs. Jobs help people more to succeed and able to make it out without joining a gang.
